Genetics Vocabulary
Put the following words and definitions in your Biology Notebook.
Law of Segregation - Every person inherits one copy of each gene from each parent
Law of Independent Assortment - Each trait is inherited separately
Heredity - Passing characteristics from parent to offspring
Gene - Inheritable units that determine traits
Allele - A gene that codes for different variations of the same trait
Polygenic Trait - Trait controlled by two or more genes.
Dominant - Trait will ALWAYS be shown, even if there is only one copy of the allele.
Recessive - Trait will be ONLY be shown if there are TWO copies of the allele.
Genotype - The allele combination for a trait (the letters)
Phenotype - The physical characteristics of a trait (what you see)
