Covalent Bonds
Rules for Naming Bimolecular Covalent Compounds Molecular Geometry (the shape of molecules)
Predicting the shape of a molecule is called Molecular Geometry and is based on the principle that electrons repel each other (VSEPR Theory). To learn about the shapes molecules form, read pages 135-138 in your book and watch the video below. Ionic Bonds
- Valence ELECTRONS are TRANSFERRED from one atom to another
- Ionic bonds form between a METAL and a NONMETAL
- The METAL will lose electrons and become a positively charged CATION
- The NONMETAL will gain electrons and become a negatively charged ANION
