Disclosures
This year we will be studying biology starting with cells and ending with ecosystems and species interactions. There are 7 major curriculum themes we will cover this year. We call these the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC). The GVCs are the overall goals for each unit and then there are specific learning targets that each student will reach to be proficient in those units. These are listed below. Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVCs) and Learning Targets GVC #1: Students will understand how energy flows, how matter cycles, and how organisms interact in an ecosystem. Learning Target 1: Use an energy pyramid and food chain to analyze how energy flows in an ecosystem. Learning Target 2: Diagram and track matter (water, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen) as it flows through an ecosystem. Learning Target 3: Classify and predict interactions among organisms. GVC #2: Students will understand the basic chemistry, structure and function of cells. Learning Target 1: Categorize the major elements utilized in cells and how they bond to form molecules Learning Target 2: Differentiate between the components and function of the major macromolecules in cells Learning Target 3: Describe the properties of water and their role in maintaining life. Learning Target 4: Investigate the cycling of matter and energy on cellular level. Learning Target 5: Relate how the organelles of the cell contribute to the function of the cell. Learning Target 6: Describe how cell transport maintains homeostasis. GVC # 3: Students will understand the relationship between structure and function of organs and organ systems. Learning Target 1: Relate basic plant structures to their functions. Learning Target 2: Distinguish between the organs and basic functions of organ systems. GVC #4: Students will compare sexual and asexual reproduction, including patterns of inheritance in sexually reproducing organisms. Learning Target 1: Compare/contrast mitosis and meiosis and their role in reproduction Learning Target 2: Compare/contrast sexual vs. asexuallyreproducing organisms Learning Target 3: Predict patterns of Mendelian inheritance using a Punnett square GVC #5: Students will be able to identify and explain how the structure of DNA relates to its function. Learning Target 1: Construct a model to describe the structure of DNA Learning Target 2: Connect principles of DNA replication to the overall function of DNA Learning Target 3: Apply principles of DNA Transcription and Translation to synthesize a protein GVC #6: Students will describe or predict how natural selection and selective breeding lead to adaptations and biological diversity. Learning Target 1: Summarize Darwin’s principles of natural selection Learning Target 2: Analyze how allele frequencies are affected by environmental changes Learning Target 3: Draw conclusions on how the cumulative effects of adaptations lead to speciation and biological diversity. GVC #7: Cite evidence that supports biological evolution over time and describe how this relates to the classification of organisms. Learning Target 1: Analyze evidence that supports evolution Learning Target 2: Classify organisms based on evolutionary relationships |
